Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Saint-Lambert in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Saint-Lambert

The Saint-Lambert neighbourhoods built between 1900 and 1950 have yards that have had time to mature: tall trees, thick hedges, wooden or stone terraces behind English-style brick cottages. A gazebo, in that setting, never came with the house. Where there is one, it is most often a permanent wooden structure designed to suit the cottage, with custom-made screen panels held by mouldings; more rarely, a retail gazebo set on an existing terrace, its standard formats a little out of place but easy to redo. Under the tall trees the film ages in the shade, while the mesh catches leaves, twigs and broken branches.

Near the river, the picture changes altitude. The condo buildings and towers have their terraces and rooftop decks, and that is where the gazebo or panelled pergola goes, often as the unit’s only outdoor corner. The wind there is constant, with nothing to slow it off the water, and film that would last years at ground level in a cottage yard flaps and splits in a single season. The panels of a rooftop gazebo do not go out the window: they travel by elevator or stairwell, one at a time, and return the same way. On those terraces, often the unit’s only outdoor space, the gazebo is not a yard accessory: it is the summer room, used morning to night, and its panels wear accordingly.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Saint-Lambert

Under the trees of a cottage yard, what damages the screen panels of a wooden structure is the branches: a tear in the middle of a panel rather than at a corner, or mesh punctured by twigs. We lift the moulding, tension new mesh — aluminum if that face of the gazebo is exposed, fibreglass under the trees — and refit the moulding. In the shade, the film yellows slowly but collects deposits that are washed off without scraping. On a rooftop deck it is the opposite: the film gives way to wind long before it yellows, and the screen panels go slack and lose their spline from constant flapping. We remake the film pane by pane, very tight, and rescreen in aluminum, which stays put where fibreglass bellies out.

Structure and access in Saint-Lambert

A cottage yard is sometimes reached through a narrow passage between two houses or a low gate in a hedge, and a large panel from a wooden structure takes two people to lift down before it goes anywhere. On a rooftop deck it is the elevator car, not the yard, that decides what can go down in one piece: a pergola panel too long for it is separated from its frame before it moves, and nothing ever travels down the outside of the building. In both cases we move neither a post nor a beam; only the panels leave their place, get rebuilt in the mobile workshop, and come back.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Saint-Lambert

The river dictates wind, and wind dictates tension: on a high terrace, film must go on tight and well fastened and screening must be aluminum, or both flap until they fail. In the old neighbourhoods the difficulty is shade and what falls from the trees: mesh that dirties, film that stains, branches that punch through. Ordinary summer-evening mosquitoes are handled by standard mesh; near the water, a tight weave also holds back the small insects of spring. Film goes up in the fall, before the cold, and comes down in spring on decks in full sun.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Saint-Lambert — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Common questions

On my rooftop deck near the river, the pergola’s film rips every winter. Is there a fix?

Yes, provided the cause is treated: the wind, not the cold. On a rooftop deck, how the film is fitted matters less than what holds it: the frame is checked for play in the pergola first, and the film is then remade into that frame. We also check that the frame has no play in the pergola, because a frame that moves works the film loose. The structure itself is not altered.

The panels of my old wooden gazebo are stapled under a moulding. Can they be rescreened without damaging the wood?

Yes. The moulding is eased off gently, the old staples come out one by one, new mesh is tensioned over the frame and the original moulding goes back on with fresh fasteners. Old wood splits if rushed, so we go slowly. If a moulding breaks despite that, it is replaced with a similar profile; the rest of the gazebo is untouched.

Branches from my trees puncture the gazebo screening every summer. What can be done?

Choose a mesh that resists puncture better on the panels the branches reach — heavier pet-resistant mesh does that job even without a cat — and trim whatever rubs against the gazebo. A tear in the centre of a panel cannot be patched cleanly: we rescreen the whole panel in its frame rather than patch mesh that has already given out.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Saint-Lambert?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Saint-Lambert, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
