Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Longueuil in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Longueuil

The Longueuil gazebo almost always stands in the same spot: on the deck, right outside the patio door. The post-war bungalows of Vieux-Longueuil and Saint-Hubert were built with a flat, regular backyard, and over the decades homeowners added a wood deck, then on top of it an aluminum or steel structure from a retailer, with standard-sized panels. A 1965 bungalow yard is wide enough for a ten-by-twelve without crowding the lawn, and that is the format that dominates. The structure often went up at the same time as the deck, well over ten years ago, and its panels have been out in the weather every day since.

The semi-detached homes and duplexes of the same housing stock, built between 1950 and 1975, change the equation: the yard is half as wide, a shared wall or a fence closes it on one side, and the gazebo is smaller — sometimes just a retail pergola with sliding panels. Between two semis the wind corridor is real: air rushes between the houses and hits the panels from the side. In a duplex, the gazebo belongs to the ground-floor unit, or sits on the upstairs deck, where panels go down by the stairs. With housing this uniform, the same panels reach the end of their life on whole streets at once — but not with the same access constraints.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Longueuil

Clear vinyl (MICA film) that has done fifteen summers on a Saint-Hubert deck has yellowed, stiffened, and its frame has set the folds; it splits at the first November gust or the first thaw that softens it and then freezes it again. The replacement goes into the original frame, with nothing changed about the structure: on a gazebo standing on a wood deck, it is also the moment to check that the uprights have not shifted with the deck. The screening lasts longer, but on the panel facing the patio door — the one opened to pass the dishes through — the mesh goes slack and the spline eventually works out of its groove. We rescreen that panel in its frame, in fibreglass or aluminum depending on exposure, and redo the others if their mesh has faded. The structure is never touched.

Structure and access in Longueuil

On a bungalow deck the teardown is straightforward: panels unclipped or unscrewed, redone at the mobile workshop in the driveway, put back. The constraint specific to semis is the path to the yard, often a narrow passage between wall and fence where a panel is carried at an angle. In duplexes, access is arranged with the tenant when the gazebo is on their deck, and panels travel by the back stairs. An older steel structure may have rust around the panel screws in its uprights; we free them carefully, but the frame itself stays as it is — replacing it is not part of the job.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Longueuil

Longueuil bungalow yards are open and sunny, with few large trees on many post-war streets: the film yellows under that sun and fibreglass weakens in it. Wind is mostly a problem between semis, where aluminum holds its tension better on the side panels. Evening insects are handled by standard mesh in most yards, a tight mesh where the yard backs onto open ground. On these decks right against the patio door, film extends use into October; where the gazebo only serves summer meals, screening alone covers the season.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Longueuil — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Straight answers

Common questions

My gazebo went up with the deck twenty years ago. Is it still worth redoing the panels?

If the structure is straight and its uprights are not eaten through, yes. A retail gazebo of that age has sound aluminum frames in most cases; it is the film and the mesh that have run their course. Redoing them gives you new panels without touching the structure.

Between my semi and the neighbour’s, the wind makes one side of the gazebo slap. What should be done with that panel?

That side panel takes the wind that speeds up between the two houses. If it is film, it will eventually split; aluminum screening, being stiffer, holds there better than fibreglass. That side can be redone alone in aluminum while the others stay in fibreglass or film, since each panel is independent.

The panel in front of the patio door is the only one torn. Can just that one be redone?

Yes. It is the panel opened and closed most, and it wears before the others. We rescreen it in its frame and put it back. If the mesh on the other panels has faded or gone slack, that is the moment to say so: redoing them in the same visit avoids coming back one panel at a time.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Longueuil?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Longueuil, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
