Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Richelieu in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Richelieu

In Richelieu, the yard depends on the vintage of the street. In the old village core on the east bank of the river, lots are deep and long planted: a gazebo there is nearly always an addition, set away from the house, sometimes a wood structure built to fit a shaded corner. In the subdivisions built between the 1980s and 2010, the drawing is entirely different — rectangular yard, rear patio, and a retailer gazebo bought along with the furniture, aluminum or steel framed with standard panel sizes. Two ages of yard, two families of gazebo, in the same municipality.

The river side adds a third case. Where houses were turned toward the water, the back is open and the gazebo sits between the house and the bank, squarely in the draft, often next to a patio door or a sunroom already serving as the summer room. The gazebo then plays the opposite role: it is the open space, the one meant to be screened in summer and closed with clear film once the season turns. That double duty wears panels faster than a purely decorative gazebo does, which is why the panes of one gazebo get measured one at a time rather than as a batch.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Richelieu

What happens to these gazebos follows a fairly fixed order. The clear vinyl (MICA film) goes first: sun yellows it, frost stiffens it, and the wind tracking along the river finds the most tired pane. Then come the screen panels — a torn corner, slack mesh that swells at the least breeze, a spline working loose and leaving a gap along the frame. The answer is the same either way: the panel comes off, the film is replaced pane by pane to measurements taken on site, or the original frame is rescreened and brought back to tension, and then it goes back up. The gazebo structure never enters into it.

Structure and access in Richelieu

The real dividing line is between the retailer gazebo and the wood structure. The first has repeating sizes and comes apart quickly; the second has one-off panes, sometimes large ones, measured individually. Height adds to it: many gazebos sit on a raised deck, and panels have to come down the steps flat, without twisting, before heading to the mobile shop. That route gets planned before anything is unscrewed — a frame bent on the way out costs more than the mesh it was carrying.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Richelieu

Near moving water, the gazebo is the one volume in the yard that closes completely: whatever comes through a few millimetres of gap stays inside, instead of drifting off the way it would under an open patio. So it is the seal around the panels, more than the weave, that decides what an evening feels like. Wind, meanwhile, tracks along the river and goes after the film far more than the mesh: on exposed faces, aluminum holds tension better. Afternoon sun finishes the job on the vinyl, which yellows first on the brightest side.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Richelieu — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Common questions

My gazebo is used from spring to fall. Do the film and the screen wear at the same rate?

No, and the gap is clear. The film absorbs UV, cold and gusts, and it is almost always the first to give. Screen lasts longer, but heavy use slackens it and opens the corners. The two are redone separately: nothing forces you to replace mesh that is still tight because one vinyl pane has split.

The gazebo sits on a raised deck. Does the whole thing have to come apart?

No. Only the panels leave their seats; the framing and the anchoring stay put. What takes care is the trip down: a panel is carried flat on the stairs, never on edge, so the frame does not twist. The route to the mobile shop is worked out before the first screwdriver comes out.

Mosquitoes still get through my gazebo screen. How is that possible?

Two ways. Either the mesh is a standard weave and lets the smallest waterside insects through, or the mesh is intact but the panel no longer closes: a slack corner or a spline out of its groove leaves a gap of a few millimetres, which is plenty. We always check the perimeter seal before blaming the weave.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Richelieu?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Richelieu, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
