Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Kirkland in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Kirkland

Kirkland was planned around the backyard. Between the 1970s and the 1990s, the West Island's large brick cottages and split-level homes were set on lots where the yard runs deep, deep enough for a big deck and a gazebo — and a pool where there is one — without anything touching. Double patio doors open straight onto it. This is the subdivision of the large-format retail gazebo: aluminum or steel frame, often with a hard roof, wide side panels, sized for a back yard deep enough to hold a large deck. The deeper the yard, the farther the gazebo sits from the house, and the more exposed it is.

These gazebos have two enemies in a Kirkland yard: wind, which crosses a deep yard with nothing to stop it before the back fence, and use. A gazebo at the far end of a deep yard serves as the summer room: it is the door that gets handled, never the side panels, so the door is what wears first, usually along its zipper. Where a small-yard gazebo ages quietly, a Kirkland gazebo works for a living. The original film, put on at purchase, has often already split, and the owner is caught between replacing the whole thing — impossible to find in the same dimensions — and redoing the panels. The second option is what we do.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Kirkland

On a large-format gazebo the panels are wide, and a big expanse of clear vinyl (MICA film) or mesh gives the wind more to grab than a small one: the film bellies, beats, splits at a corner; fibreglass slackens and flaps; the spline, pushed by the tension, works out of its groove along a long side. The door panel, the one handled most, is nearly always the first to give, often along the zipper. We take down each panel, redo the film or mesh to exact size in the original frame with a new spline, and put it back. On the low panels the dog leans against, pet-resistant mesh replaces standard fibreglass without changing the frame.

Structure and access in Kirkland

Kirkland's difficulty is size. A large-format gazebo panel is long, thin and flexible: it takes two people, travels flat, and is redone on a bench long enough to stretch the film in one motion, without a fold. With the gazebo at the far end of a deep yard, the panels travel to the mobile workshop in front of the house, or the workshop moves in along the side of the lot when the passage allows. Where there is a pool, we work away from the water and make sure no spline or offcut ends up in it. The structure itself, hard roof included, does not move.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Kirkland

A deep yard, open to the neighbours' yards, takes the wind head-on: that is why film gives out so often here, and why we stretch it tight and put it on the windward faces before the first cold. Full south sun yellows the exposed panes in a few seasons; those panes get redone before the others. For the screens, panel width is what decides: on a face as wide as those of a large-format gazebo, a soft mesh dishes enough to be seen from the deck, while the same mesh stays flat on a narrow panel. And because the gazebo sits far from the house, anything missing when it is closed back up costs a return trip: zippers and panel clips get checked before the workshop is packed away.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Kirkland — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Common questions

My gazebo is a large hard-roof model at the far end of the yard. Can you redo its panels without moving it?

Yes. The structure and its hard roof stay put. Only the side panels come off, two people to each because of their length, and are redone flat in the mobile workshop — in front of the house or along the side of the lot, depending on the passage. Each panel then goes back exactly where it was, with its new film or mesh stretched in the original frame.

The dog went through the low panel of the gazebo. Will ordinary screen mesh hold?

Probably not for long. On a low gazebo panel the mesh sits at leaning height with no rail behind it: it takes the push on its own, which standard fibreglass does not do for long. Pet-resistant mesh, thicker and far tougher against claws and pushing, stretches in the same frame with the same spline: the panel keeps its look and its place, only the mesh changes. We keep it for the low panels, the others staying in ordinary mesh.

The spline on my panels pops out every spring. Why, and can it be fixed?

On a wide panel, mesh or film pulls hard on its spline, and frost stiffens the rubber spline until it shrinks and jumps out of its groove. A spline simply pushed back in will come out again. We redo the mesh or film with a new spline of the right diameter, tensioned evenly on all four sides, and the problem does not come back at the same pace.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Kirkland?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Kirkland, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
