Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Hampstead in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Hampstead

Hampstead is a garden city built between 1920 and 1955, and its backyards carry that history: gardens planted long ago, mature trees rising above the rooflines, thick hedges, behind substantial brick and stone cottages in the Tudor or colonial manner. None of these houses came with a gazebo. What stands in these gardens was added by owners, sometimes during an extension: a permanent wooden structure designed to match the house, a screened pergola at the back of the garden, or a retail gazebo of a more refined model than usual, chosen so as not to clash with a stone façade.

The result is that no two gazebos in the town are alike, and most have one-of-a-kind panels. A custom wooden structure behind a Tudor cottage has openings that follow its posts, battens stained to match the house, and film that has to stay discreet. In a garden city, appearance counts as much as performance: mesh that is too pale or a batten in the wrong wood is noticed from the terrace. And under the big trees the gazebo lives in shade: the film yellows less there, but leaves, branches and damp work on the roof and the upper panels in ways direct sun does not.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Hampstead

On these wooden structures the screen is held by battens fixed to the frame, and the screen is what is most likely to be at fault: under mature trees an upper panel is what a falling branch punctures, and fibreglass slackens in the damp shade until it bellies. We lift the battens, stretch new mesh over the original frame, and put back clean battens stained to match the rest. The clear vinyl (MICA film), where there is any, is redone the same way, cut to the size of each opening. On a retail gazebo, spline and aluminum groove take over: the panel comes down, is redone in the mobile workshop, goes back up. Either way the structure is not touched.

Structure and access in Hampstead

Hampstead's challenge is custom work and finish. A permanent structure behind a restored cottage has no two identical openings, and one crooked measurement gives a panel that will not fit or a batten that gapes. So every opening is measured on site, the colour and profile of the existing battens are noted, and everything is redone to match. Access is generally easy — a garden at grade — but a gazebo at the back of the lot, behind the hedge, means carrying panels across the garden, and the route is chosen before anything is lifted: path, lawn or the side of the lot, never through the planting.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Hampstead

Under the garden city's mature trees, wind arrives softened: it is not the wind that damages film here, but the branches and leaves that pile up on a gazebo roof left standing all winter. Aluminum mesh on the large openings stays flat in those conditions, and the panels facing the beds are the ones to redo first, since a puncture on that side is what gets noticed from the terrace. The film, less exposed to sun here than in an open yard, lasts longer; it goes on before frost on the faces that catch the garden breeze, and comes off in spring to let the air back in.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Hampstead — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Common questions

The wooden gazebo behind our cottage was built to match the house. Will rescreening change its look?

Not if it is redone to match. The battens holding the mesh are lifted and replaced with new ones of the same profile, stained the same colour; the new mesh can be chosen in a shade close to the old. Fresh mesh goes unnoticed; a batten in a different wood, or a finish that changes from one side to the next, does not.

A branch fell on the gazebo and punctured an upper panel. Can that panel be redone on its own?

Yes. Each opening of a wooden structure is treated on its own: we lift that panel's battens, remove the punctured mesh, stretch the new one and refasten the battens. While we are there we check that the wooden frame did not split under the impact, which is the real risk with a branch, and we tell you if it did.

The gazebo is at the back of the garden, behind the hedge. How do you get the panels out?

One panel at a time, on foot, across the garden to the mobile workshop in the driveway. On a wooden structure, rescreening can often be done right in place, panel resting on its battens, without moving anything. Either way, we walk the route before starting so as not to step in the beds or catch the low branches.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Hampstead?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Hampstead, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
