Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Sainte-Sophie in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Sainte-Sophie

Housing in Sainte-Sophie is spread across large wooded lots, and the gazebo has a particular place there: it is rarely up against the house. On a former lakeside cottage that was extended and then lived in year-round, the structure was often built on the water side or off to one side, on a slab or a wood platform, sometimes around a hot tub. These are permanent wood structures, built to suit the spot, with one-off panels generally larger than anything sold in a store. No size repeats, not even from one face of the same structure to the next, and that is what decides how the work is done.

The other half of the territory is made up of bungalow subdivisions and newer houses, with more ordinary yards and trees that are still young. There the retailer gazebo rules: aluminum or steel frame, common panel sizes, and the original clear vinyl (MICA film) installed at purchase and never changed since. These two worlds sit minutes apart in the same Laurentians municipality, and they do not wear their panels the same way. Under trees, it is what falls on them that does the damage; in the open, it is sun and wind.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Sainte-Sophie

Under a tree canopy, film takes a kind of wear you do not see elsewhere: sap that sticks and hardens, wet leaves pressed against it all autumn, fine scratches from being rubbed clean. Scratched vinyl goes milky, and milky vinyl does not come back — that is material, not dirt. We replace it light by light in the original frame. The screen panels take the twigs and small branches: a clean hole in the middle of otherwise sound mesh is almost always that. On a large panel from a wood structure, we rescreen inside the frame and pull the tension back by hand, because a big slack screen drums and tears at the corner.

Structure and access in Sainte-Sophie

Panel size is the real constraint on the wood structures here. A custom gazebo panel can be twice the area of a window screen: it takes two people to remove, it travels flat, and it does not fit everywhere. On a platform built near the water, the original screws have taken up damp: they come out with a hand driver, never with a power gun. Every panel gets numbered before it comes off — on a hand-built structure, two neighbouring openings are not interchangeable, and the mistake only shows at reassembly. The gazebo framing itself is never taken apart.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Sainte-Sophie

The woods call for two opposite choices. For insects, the answer is tight-weave mesh: under a canopy and near water, the smallest ones pass straight through ordinary fibreglass, and a gazebo exists precisely so you can sit outside in the evening. Mechanically, fibreglass springs back after a branch strike where aluminum keeps the dent — on the faces under the trees, that counts. The film goes into those same frames in autumn; under trees it spends that season among wet leaves and sap, which is what shortens its useful life.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Sainte-Sophie — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Straight answers

Common questions

A branch came down and punched through two gazebo panels. Does the whole structure need redoing?

No. The structure and the panels are two separate things, and we never touch the framing. The two damaged panels get redone in their frames, provided the frames themselves held. If one bent, we straighten it or rebuild the piece to the same measurement. We look over the other panels while we are there, since a falling branch usually leaves marks elsewhere too.

We leave the film up all summer for the hot tub. Does it last less long?

Yes, noticeably. Vinyl ages mainly in sunlight: left up from June through August it takes the strongest UV of the year, yellows sooner and stiffens earlier. It is a perfectly reasonable way to use it — you simply have to expect to replace it more often. On the sunniest faces, some owners alternate: film in winter, screen in summer.

The panels on our wood gazebo are big and heavy. Should we take them down first?

No need, we handle that. Two things do help: clearing the access around the structure, and telling us when you call how many panels are involved and roughly how large. A large custom panel is not handled like a window screen, and that is better planned beforehand than discovered on arrival.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Sainte-Sophie?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Sainte-Sophie, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
