Whatever your retailer calls it — MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic, sun-shelter transparent fabric — it is the same material, and we replace it in Dunham in your existing panels.

Why the vinyl gives up

Summer UV

Sun yellows and clouds the vinyl. Film that crackles to the touch is at end of life.

Winter frost

Below freezing, MICA turns brittle — one handling or one gust splits it outright.

Wind, all year

Slack vinyl flaps like a sail and eventually tears at the seams.

Gazebos in Dunham

In Dunham, the gazebo is almost never original. The 19th-century brick and stone houses that make up the loyalist village were not built with that kind of space: what exists today was added later, in the yard or at the far end of the lot, and it is often a wooden structure built to fit and to suit the older building. That choice has a direct consequence for the work: the panes are one-offs, their dimensions do not repeat from one face to the next, and the frame was sometimes made by a carpenter rather than shipped in a box. Everything is measured on site, opening by opening, before anything is cut.

Outside the village the land spreads out among farms, vineyards and renovated country houses, and the setting changes completely. There the gazebo sits out in the open, with nothing around it to break the air: a renovated country house has often kept a wide clearing in front, and a vineyard is by definition an open slope facing the sun. A gazebo in that setting takes everything — wind crossing the field, light from morning to evening, the cool that rises at dusk. You find both permanent wooden structures and retailer models set on a deck added behind the house. Both kinds are worked the same way on site, but only one of them can be measured from a catalogue page.

Screens and vinyl: what gives out in Dunham

Clear vinyl — MICA film — suffers most in that kind of exposure. It yellows under the sun of open ground, stiffens at the first cold, and stiff vinyl meeting a gust splits outright: the tear starts at a corner or a fastening point and the pane begins to flap. We redo the film new, cut to measurements taken pane by pane, into the existing frame. On the screen panels the most frequent failure is still slack mesh that ripples at the slightest breeze, followed by the corner nick and the spline lifted out of its groove. The panel comes down, is rescreened, and goes back up.

Structure and access in Dunham

A wooden structure built to fit is not handled like a retailer gazebo. Its panes are often held by nailed or screwed mouldings: those come off one at a time, without splitting, and go back on afterward. The frame itself is no longer quite square after a few years on country ground that freezes and thaws, so diagonals get recorded along with height and width. Size adds to it: a gazebo built to suit a 19th-century brick house usually holds more panes than a retailer model, and each one has its own dimensions.

Wind, sun, insects: choosing in Dunham

A gazebo standing in a field or along the edge of a vineyard has nothing to shelter it. Wind arrives full on, unobstructed, and the film takes it: properly tensioned and held along its full height, it barely drums and it lasts; installed with slack, it fatigues in one season. The sun of open ground also tires fibreglass faster than aluminum mesh. And near woodlots and country ditches the dusk insects are small and plentiful: a tight weave is worth the cost on the faces where people sit.

A real job, start to finish

This job was not in Dunham — it shows our method, the same everywhere: panels down, new vinyl pane by pane, panels back up.

  1. Six-pane gazebo panel with torn, sagging MICA vinyl before replacement
1 On arrival: the original vinyl, torn
  2. Roll of new MICA vinyl stretched over a gazebo panel frame on the work stand
2 Fitting: new vinyl drawn over the frame
  3. First finished gazebo panel with perfectly clear new MICA vinyl
3 First panel done, crystal-clear vinyl
  4. Finished six-pane gazebo panel with new MICA vinyl and the original frame intact
4 Final result: six panes, frame intact

Common questions

My gazebo was built by a carpenter, not bought. Can the panels still be redone?

Yes. A custom-built structure is treated as a series of very large openings: each pane is measured, the mouldings holding the vinyl or the mesh come off, the piece is remade to the recorded dimensions and put back. The wooden structure itself is not touched, drilled or altered.

The film split in the middle of winter. Should I wait?

A split pane grows with every gust, because cold vinyl does not return to shape. Measuring and noting it as soon as you see it avoids finding in spring that the tear has run the full height. It is also a good moment to check the nearby fastening points, which are often the cause.

Can screen be added to a gazebo that has only ever had film?

Yes, if the pane's frame can accept mesh — which is nearly always the case on a wooden structure with mouldings. On a wooden structure with mouldings, both uses fit the same frame: mesh from May to September for the air, then film to cut the wind off the field.

Do you replace gazebo vinyl in Dunham?

Yes, at your home. We travel to Dunham, remove the panels, replace the MICA vinyl in the original frames and put everything back — the gazebo structure is never touched. It is one of our specialties.

MICA film, clear vinyl, gazebo plastic: are they the same thing?

Yes. Depending on the retailer it is called MICA film, clear vinyl, clear plastic or transparent fabric — the same flexible material that cuts wind and holds warmth. We replace it on gazebos and sun shelters alike.

Can a single pane be replaced?

Yes. The vinyl is replaced pane by pane, in the existing frame — no need to redo the whole panel for one tear. If several panes have yellowed, doing them together gives a uniform result.

What does it cost?

On assessment: the price depends on the number of panels and their dimensions. The quote is free, and a photo is often enough to price without a visit. Fabrication and installation guaranteed one year.
